Video Transcript
i'm going to talk about how you can
get a job at a hostel if you're
traveling with very
limited budget or you find a place that
you like the look of you want to stay a
bit longer and reduce your expenditure
hey just before the video starts i've
written a little guide on remote working
uh it's free you can check it out in the
description just talks about why you'd
want to do this what to look for in a
job a couple of recommendations for
platforms so you can find one i think
it's the best way to live so if i can
help more people do it amazing
enjoy the video
it's a pretty wonderful view of the
mountains over there
i've always had this dream
that i wanted to open a hostel but i
realized i've only stayed at them i
haven't actually worked in one
and so i said to myself right i'm gonna
go get a job at a hostel and just find
out how it actually works
the very next day i'm staying here and a
girl doing the reception job eight in
the morning until two she leaves
and i've been talking to the guys
here
and they said you want to take the job
literally a day after i said i need to
get a job at a hostel to find out how to
run one
and so i took it on
the job comes with all the meals
or you get your room like a nice private
room shared with another person who's
also working here it's a close-knit team
and a family
it's been a very nice experience
but i want to talk about how you can
actually do this yourself
or one way you can do it because there's
other places like
work away
there's a website specifically for
like getting jobs like this is
volunteering
but one way that you can do it
especially to get to know the place
before you try and get a job
is to just turn up at the hostel be nice
talkative respectful polite
interesting
find out if there's a position by
talking to the people that are actually
working here already
and then ask
say i want to stay around here for a
while
do you have something that i could do in
the hostel
and
stay
a lot of places
have high turnover and they're always
taking
people on
some countries you're not really allowed
to work so you have to be a bit careful
about that
but if you just want to get some
experience and you maybe want to stay a
bit longer somewhere
great way to go and a great way to do
that is just to talk to people find out
who is running it get to know them these
hostels they're usually pretty family
orientated i don't mean family
orientated like
people coming with their families i mean
family orientated as in the team bonds
together like a family
and that's a very nice environment
so like the the reception job
is one that you might get and your
responsibilities are going to be
checking people in checking them out
showing them
the room that they're staying in dealing
with their problems if they have some
if you
are at a hostel and they're running
tours
like there's activities in the area like
boat trips or
um i don't know like you can go see the
canyon there's a place here called
palmukali which is some salt
springs
you can show people those tours
you can say yeah we organize these tours
maybe you get a commission payment maybe
they send you on the tour as well
because how can you really sell it if
you haven't been on it yourself
you also get your room
and so
if you're staying somewhere and you're
volunteering they're going to give you
accommodation they're likely to give you
food as well
and maybe a discount in the bar if you
like a beer
it's a really good way of staying
somewhere
the actual financial
reimbursement if you if you calculate
how much you work for
the kind of price of the room
it's not going to be the same as if
you're getting a job somewhere like
england like it's just not the same but
the other things that you take out of it
like the experience of
learning how this all works if you want
to do it yourself one day
meeting people being the first to greet
people getting customer service
experience
there's so much that you get out of it
that
the money side of it's not really a
not a big factor
and if you are the type of person where
let's say you want to go traveling
right now and you haven't saved up money
this could be an option for you you
could get out of your country
go and volunteer all of your
accommodation is paid for
and maybe you're trying to get a remote
job so you come out here
you work you get your room paid for your
expenses are basically zero especially
if you don't have any debt that you're
paying off
your expenses are basically zero
and that gives you the time that you
need
to get yourself a remote job while
you're traveling
so don't feel like oh i have to be stuck
in my country if i
before i got a job i can't leave before
i have a job
you can do something like this
if you need to
i mean come on look at this that's
pretty nice
that's pretty nice
so yeah that's one way of doing it
meet people here
find out if you like the like the place
talk to people be social be polite
show that you're
pretty smart you can think on your feet
you can even you can even practice on a
booking system and say yeah i know how
to check people in and i have to check
people out
and then just ask say can i stay here
for a while do you have a job for me
sometimes it'll be building maintenance
could be cleaning
there is a
there is a shift which is not very nice
but if you're really desperate and
you really want to do it
you could pick up the night shift
probably not
the best one to do working nights in my
opinion
it's not so good but i understand that
people have to do it
i prefer to be out and awake
during the day rather than sleeping
yeah reception job
at a hostel
especially if you want to learn how a
hostel actually runs because you want to
make your own
great thing to do
