i'm going to try and teach you how to read a demographics chart in the shortest amount of time possible first first why should you do this we have a declining population they're going to be talking about a lot in the news it would be good if you actually knew how to read one of these charts what are you going to learn in this video first what demographic chart is what do both sides mean how to read it and the meaning of life this is a demographics chart along the y-axis also known as the top straight one that goes up you have the age along the bottom you have a numerical value for what size the population is it can be a percentage of the total or it can be an actual number of millions what do both sides mean left male right female how do you read this if you have a population pyramid which looks like an actual pyramid the right way up this shows a rapid growth population it's typically the bottom of the pyramid is much wider than the top each new bar is getting larger this is great for countries but can you sustain the growth aging population this is what you're going to be hearing about a lot in the news it's much wider up at the top each new bar is getting smaller and most countries are like this the meaning of life is 42 obviously
